Ultra-Perfect Score for Ultrasound

Perfect score! Milford Hospital’s Ultrasound service was re-accredited for three years by the American College of Radiology. Staff performs 8500 Ultrasound exams a year using three ultrasound units. To reach a perfect score, it must be perfect in all areas: anatomy, image resolution, patient identificatiolabeled correctly and the final report must be accurate. Milford Hospital earned a perfect score in: Obstetrical, General, Vascular n, & Gynecological ultrasound.

Paul Moss Retiring As President; CFO Joseph Pelaccia Named President

Paul E. Moss, 67, has announced that after 30 years at the helm of the independent, award winning and financially solvent Milford Hospital, he is retiring by the end of 2009. The board this week named Joseph Pelaccia to lead the hospital as of Jan. 1, 2010. Pelaccia has been chief financial officer since 1975 of Milford Hospital, where he has served for 37 years.

“Paul had led Milford Hospital through so many clinical advances and challenges in the past 30 years, and with the support of a strong medical staff has helped create one of the best medical centers in the region. We are extraordinarily pleased with what he has helped accomplish, and look forward to continue working with Joe as we continue our strong course,” said Howard Treat, chairman of the Board. Treat also said the board has asked Moss to remain for up to six months in a consulting role after Jan. 1, “to work with Joe, the medical staff, and administrative team to ensure Milford Hospital continues to do the great job it has been doing.” 

At the annual Corporators meeting this week, Robert Beard, was also named a lifetime honorary board member. He has served for more than five decades in various capacities, said Treat. Tedd Weisman, MD, president of the Milford Hospital medical staff, said “I wish Paul well. He has worked tirelessly with our medical staff, and been a strong proponent of the medical and surgical services for which the hospital is known. Dr. Weisman, also chairman of Orthopedic Surgery and a pioneer in some orthopedic techniques, said he has also worked with Pelaccia for many years and “ I look forward to working with him on future projects.”

Health Dept H1N1 Assist

Milford Hospital this week assisted the Milford Health Dept. (MHD) with needed H1N1 shots. Hundreds of hospital employees, especially those involved in patient care, have already been "shot," so many of the extras today were given to the MHD, which apparently was very short on shots for community folks. Joint Center Expanding

Expansion of the CT Joint Center is underway, based on regional demand for hip, knee and other joint replacement surgery. Three years ago the center opened with nine rooms, and the addition of two aditional private rooms is expected to be done in a few months. More than 500 procedures are done a year by Milford Hospital joint specialists. The center includes large rooms that allow patients to easily move about, and house ortho equipment such as walkers, crutches, commodes and CPM knee machines. Rooms have large handicap bathrooms with elevated toilets. New flat screen TVs & custom maple cabinetry complete the healthy ambiance.

Fall Team Lauded

Milford Hospital's Fall Team was recognized at the CT Hospital Assoc. (CHA) for participating in a year-long patient fall prevention collaborative. "CHA & Qualidigm congratulate Milford Hospital for its tireless & enthusiastic participation in the 2009 CT Statewide Patient Falls Collaborative "Working Together for a Safer Connecticut." The program prevented falls associated with serious injuries over the past year. The team: Head Nurses Linda Dinkle, Diane Marangelo, Jayne Pinto; Nursing VP Wendy Woodcock; Pharmacy director Bryan Lampner; physical therapy; & staff nurses Denise Bias & Christina Smith.
 

TB, AIDS Study Prep Gets MD Assist

When an international TB and AIDS study kicks off next year in Russia, it will have the guidance and input of Milford Hospital’s VP of medical affairs, who is also the medical director of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Lloyd Friedman, MD, Yale University Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Pulmonary & Critical Care section, and TB expert, visited Russia in August as an investigator on a project to determine the prevalence of tuberculosis and AIDS in street youth in St. Petersburg. Unique Knee Surgery with Computer Aid

Seeing what Amit Lahav, MD, couldn’t see helped a Milford woman get the “perfect fit” for a new knee. If not for the computer, and the techniques used in this cutting-edge procedure, the woman would not have had a knee replacement. Dr. Lahav said “she is doing great. She has no pain and is walking well.” The Milford Hospital orthopedic surgeon said the patient had a rod placed in her femur years ago that could not be removed. “She had significant arthritis in her knee where she was a candidate for a knee replacement. Unfortunately, using traditional instrumentation, a replacement cannot be done since a surgeon cannot instrument her femur because she has a metal rod in the bone.” The full story: Download Robotic
